Rome was the third stop on our European honeymoon in 2009. In fact, this was our first trip to Europe and Rome was a must see destination for us. We love everything Rome has to offer – history, art, culture, amazing food and wine. The list goes on and on and on.
We stopped at this cute little cafe when we first arrived. We had spent the prior week in Greece and jumped at the chance to get our first taste of Italian food. After we got our bearings, we headed out for some exploring.
One of our first stops was the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. We loved these two historic sites. We stood in sheer amazement as we walked the area taking in the architecture and magnitude of some of the oldest and most important buildings of the ancient city.
Our next stop was the famed Musei Capitolini. This is hands down one of the most expansive museums we’ve visited. You could easily spend an entire day here exploring the sculptures and paintings.
We loved visiting the Altare Della Patria. The building’s exterior was amazing but the best part was the rooftop views of the city.
We couldn’t believe how many tourists were hanging out on the Spanish Steps. We quickly passed them by as we explored other attractions in the city.
We enjoyed dinner at a restaurant just outside the Pantheon after exploring the inside of this monument. We’ve seen this exact spot in movies so it was really cool to be able to experience it for ourselves.
No visit to Rome would be complete without a visit to Piazza di Trevi to make a wish in the Trevi Fountain.
We spent an entire day exploring Vatican City. We booked a room the night before right outside of the city walls so that we could be first in line when the Vatican Museum opened.
Our next stop was St. Peter’s Basilica. We even ventured to the top of the church to get a different viewpoint of the area.
We stumbled upon an open air market and of course had to purchase some meat, cheese and bread to enjoy later.
The Colosseum was David’s favorite place we visited in Rome.
We grabbed some food and wine at a small cafe in Piazza Navona with an amazing view of the fountain. The house wine was fabulous! Not just at this cafe, but at all cafes and restaurants we visited. It was one of our favorite things to enjoy during the trip.
Castel Sant’Angelo was one of our last stops.
Bottom Line:
Rome is a wonderful place to visit and it will always have a special place in our hearts.
