We spent five days in Cancun and Isla Murjeres to celebrate my 30th birthday. My birthday falls in January so of course we wanted to visit somewhere warm. Plus, I was finally at peace with getting another year older. For some reason, my late twenties were tough! Naturally, Mexico bubbled up to the top of the list as a cheap and easy celebratory destination.
We stayed at an all-inclusive resort about 40 minutes from the Cancun airport. The resort had several restaurants, pools and beach front access. We spent the majority of our visit soaking up the sun and trying to stay dry at the resort. We unfortunately didn’t experience the best weather however, unlimited drinks helped us get through the rain.
We made a trip into the downtown area during the day and one evening. We bounced around a few different clubs which is exactly what everyone needs on their 30th birthday.
After a few lowkey days, we took the ferry to Isla Mujeres for the day. I must say, this was a highlight of the trip. We rented a golf cart as soon as we arrived and were off to explore the island. We had such a great time cruising around the island. Scooter rentals were available too, but the golf cart was much more our speed. Our first stop was Cliff of the Dawn, an outdoor sculpture garden. This was my favorite part of our visit to the island.
We also made a visit to Tortugranja. I have always loved turtles so it was really neat to see so many up close at this small aquarium. We ended the day with lunch at Acantilado which was the perfect way send off for our island visit.
Bottom Line:
Isla Mujeres is a must stop location on any Cancun itinerary. It’s unlikely that we’ll make another trip to Mexico, but I am glad we have the memories we made during this trip to hold on to.
