A Weekend in Washington D.C.

David and I visited D.C. a few years ago. My sister was living in Richmond, VA at the time and D.C. was an easy destination for both of us to get to. We stayed in in Dupont Circle at a fun and quirky Kimpton hotel called Hotel Helix. The location was great for the weekend of sightseeing we had in store.

One of the things that stood out to us right away was the sheer number of museums, monuments, and historical sites across the city. Not only were they impressive, we were able to visit most free of charge. We visited all the well know memorials like FDR Memorial, Lincoln National Memorial, Washington Monument, Martin Luther King Jr Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, National World War II Memorial and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. The memorials are hard to describe and photos just don’t do them justice. It was awe inspiring to see, truly giving you a sense of American history and those who came before us and shaped the country into what it is today.

We also visited some of the lesser known ones like the Albert Einstein Memorial.

D.C. is an amazing place to visit for museums. It has everything for history buffs and art enthusiast alike. We tried to take in as many as we possibly could during our weekend visit. We visited the Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of the American Indian, the Smithsonian Institution Archives and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

To get our fill of art, we visited the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, the National Gallery of Art, and The Philips Collection. I must say, each were impressive in their own right. The sculpture garden and the National Gallery were hands down my favorite.

We visited the Arlington National Cemetery and were lucky enough to witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This too was an awe-inspiring moment for us.

We made a visit to Georgetown for some shopping and dinner at Thunder Burger. We also watch an LSU football game at an alumni bar called 18th Amendment which was a great time.

We ate at several amazing restaurants. Some highlights included Oya Restaurant & Lounge, Scion Restaurant and Zaytinya.

We made a visit to the Smithsonian National Zoo to check out the panda exhibit. And, of course, no trip to D.C. would be complete without a visit to The White House and the U.S. Capital.
