A Weekend in Savannah

Savannah is a quintessential Southern city. It has all the best things we’ve come to know and love about the south –  super friendly people always ready to have a good time, southern accents, amazing food, and of course walking down the street with your favorite beverage in hand. Savannah reminded us so much of back home, particularly New Orleans.

We decide to spend a long weekend getting to know the city in December of 2015. It was our first visit to this Southern jewel and we were not disappointed. We stayed in the Historic District kicking off our visit with some antique shopping and exploring the riverfront. There were so many different bars and shops along this stretch of the city and with the river serving as the city’s backdrop it was a perfect introduction to Savannah. There was also some history to be found including the Cracked Earth Monument dedicated to those who lost their lives during WWII.

We decided to be super touristy and joined one of the hop-on hop-off tour trains. It was such a fun way to see the city and learn more about the history of iconic buildings and the neighborhood squares.  We stopped at Forsyth Park which was a stunning part of the city. The huge trees and large fountain just oozed with Southern charm. There was even an organic farmer’s market happening with fresh juice, produce, and skin care among other items. We grabbed a coffee at the edge of the park and spent about an hour or so perusing the grounds. We also made stops at City Market, The Pirates’ House, The Salt Table and the Cathedral of St John the Baptist.

SCAD, or the Savannah College of Art and Design, was an interesting stop during our visit. It serves as a teaching museum with many student’s artwork on display – everything from couture gowns to digital mediums. It was also really interesting to see the transformation of several building into campus dorms – think 1970’s Howard Johnson hotel.

The food in Savannah was one of our favorite parts of our visit. We dined at Olde Pink House, Green Truck Pub, The Grey and Flying Monk Noodle Bar. All very different types of restaurants but equally delicious! We also loved Service Brewing – a veteran owned brewery with amazing beer. We are always happy to support veteran owned organizations particularly Army veterans since that is the branch of military David served in for so many years.

We spent the evenings indulging in amazing food and of course some bar hopping too. Some of our favorites were Savannah Smiles Dueling Pianos Saloon and The Bohemian Hotel rooftop bar.

Bottom Line:

Savannah is great place to spend a long weekend and December is the perfect time to visit. The weather is not too hot and you miss the summer crowds. Come with a healthy appetite and a thirst for old Southern charm.
