Stonehenge and the English Countryside

Stonehenge is one of the greatest mysteries of modern civilization. We knew we had to make a trip to visit this wonder during our weeklong visit to London. While this was only an overnight excursion, this was one of David’s biggest highlights of the trip.

We rented a car and headed out of London in late afternoon just in time to watch the sunset. The highway was quite interesting – the speed limit was X and drivers were conditioned to move out of the way of faster moving vehicles. This was a huge help as we ran into quite a bit of traffic before ultimately reaching the highway.

Once we exited the highway we were instantly met with intense fog. It was one of the, if not the scariest, car rides we had ever been on. We got a little turned around and even ended up driving the wrong way on a one way street. Luckily, David got us to our hotel safely after a few scares along the way.

We stayed at the Pembroke Arms Hotel in Wilton, England. The hotel, an 18th Century ex-Coaching Inn, was very quaint and everything I imagined the English countryside to be. We checked in, settled into our room and then headed downstairs for dinner. The food at the hotel was outstanding. David had pan fried calves liver and bacon and I had the Chicken Schnitzel. Both of which were delicious.

We got an early start the next morning so that we would arrive at Stonehenge as soon as it opened. We awoke to another quite foggy day which kept us from capturing the true momentousness of the temple. Surprisingly too, the fog seemed to get worse and worse as the day went on.

We grabbed coffee and snack from the café, visited the onsite Neolithic museum and then headed to Windsor Castle a royal residence at Windsor in the English county of Berkshire before making our way back to London.

Bottom Line:

David would hands down recommend visiting Stonehenge to anyone in the area. I have to agree, it’s pretty mind blowing when you consider the intellect that was needed to create this structure so many years ago. Windsor Castle is an easy visit either on the way to or from Stonehenge. The architecture of the castle is quite stunning, plus, it’s the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world.
