A Day in Figueres and Girona

The home of Salvador Dali and a filming location for Game of Thrones – these are great reasons to visit Figueres and Girona, right? We decided to make a day trip to both during our weeklong trip to Barcelona. We took the train first thing in the morning to Figueres arriving just before 9:00 a.m. We purchased entry tickets to The Dali Theatre-Museum the night before to ensure we were able to enter as soon as it opened. The train station is within easy walking distance of the museum. We were treated to a cute little farmer’s market on our way. The meat and cheese trucks were our favorite vendors.

We arrived at the museum minutes before opening and managed to be second in line. We were blown away upon entering. We spent about an hour or so taking in all the museum had to offer including the Dali Joyas jewelry museum.

Next, we headed to the Figueres Valant train station for our journey to Girona. It was a quick 15-minute train ride and we immediately headed into the old town on foot upon arrival. Known for its medieval architecture, the walled Old Quarter and the winding cobblestone streets, it’s no wonder why this place served as a backdrop for the Game of Thrones television series.  It also known for its amazing restaurants too, home to the number one rated restaurant in the world.

After taking in the amazing sites, we stopped at Nu for an amazing lunch. The tuna and caviar dish was hands down my favorite!

Bottom Line:

Girona is a quick 30-minute training ride from Barcelona making this an easy day trip from the city. Plus, it’s a nice break from the crowd you encounter in Barcelona. Both cities are home to world-renowned restaurants and museums which made it a highlight of our visit.
